View Funeral Webcast part 1View Funeral Webcast Part 2Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Horton, Sr., 81, resident of West Ninth Street, departed this life on Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1:00 P.M. at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Anthony Paschall officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Monday from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born July 29, 1935, in Limestone, Alabama, he was the son of the late Ulyless Leslie and the late Ula Bell Horton Leslie. On October 29, 1961, he married Mary Ruth James Horton and they had celebrated fifty-five exciting years together. Woody spent his formative years in Lynnville before moving to Columbia as a young man. He worked as a chauffeur for several families and businesses before beginning his thirty-five-year career at Sterchi's Furniture Company which became Heilig-Meyer Furniture Company before his retirement. He was very meticulous about his work delivering furniture and also personally kept his truck in good running condition. He received a 25-year perfect driving award during this employment. Woody began his association with Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home in 1954 and remained a faithful employee and friend through the years. He leaves to cherish his devoted wife, Mary Ruth James Horton of Columbia; son, Woodrow Wilson (Brenda) Horton, Jr. of Columbia; grandchildren, Gen'Taris Horton, LA Trance Horton, Meco Childress, Cedrick Childress, Cord Childress; ten great grandchildren; sisters, Wendolyn El, Patricia Bey, Charlet Jones, all of Athens, Alabama; brother, Clarence (Viola) Horton of Columbia, Maryland; devoted niece, Tracie Brown; and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marian Renee Horton. Active pallbearers will be Donald Sharp, Harvey Fischer, Manuel Young, Clarence Bellafant, Kerry Buchanan, and Todd Prince. Honorary pallbearers will include Howard Johnson, Jeff Hargrove, M. D. Young, Billy Patrick, Mac Rochelle, Dr. Shawn Gentry, Dr. Mark Cobb, Doug Brown, and his Kathy's Restaurant Family. Nieces will serve as flower bearers.
